The Cannonau grapes for the Riserva come from the Alghero vineyard. Cannonau is a
late-ripening variety which thrives in the hot, dry conditions of Sardinia. The vines are
grown in both the warm and sandy seaside vineyards, combined with the harsh and
rock inland soils of the hills. The vines are trained according to spurred cordon methods
and have an average age of 18 years. They are planted at a density of 4,000 vines per
hectare. The climate is typically Mediterranean which is positively influenced by the
proximity of the sea, with mild winters and warm, dry summers and favourable diurnal
temperature differences. The Mistral wind, which is often rich in saltiness, combined with
the proximity to the sea, impart the wines with saline notes and minerality. The vineyard
is cultivated sustainably; the vines are surrounded by tree lined avenues and
Mediterranean scrubland to encourage biodiversity. Integrated management is used
to combat vine pests.
