The Spatz Quartet - Sinatra Unplugged 12 June 2020
Mr Sinatra, surely the greatest crooner of them all – his music is iconic, his easy flow truly masterful, and his technique led the way for all to follow. His hits were usually always characterised with wonderful orchestral or big band arrangements. Tonight The Spatz Quartet strip away the orchestras, big bands and large musical scores, leaving the melodies to speak for themselves. And of course they do when the music comprises compositions from Sammy Cahn, Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Cole Porter, Gershwin and others. Roy Mac, Spatz highly respected bandleader and vocalist, never attempts to perform Sinatra material as a tribute act, but brings his own take on the music – accompanied by world class jazz guitarist Malcolm Macfarlane, sophisticated horns and reeds player Dick Lee, and the inimitable Ed Kelly on Bass, they offer the music in a completely different style. Stripped back, not even a piano in sight, the focus is on the strength of the melodies.
