Sicily's rich wine history spans over 7,000 years, starting with the ancient Greeks, who planted the first vineyards of Nero d’Avola in 5,000 BC. The Romans embraced Sicily’s wines, making it a key producer for the Empire. Through the centuries, the island blossomed into one of Italy's most important wine regions, known for its unique terroirs, indigenous varieties, and exceptional wines. 

In 2025, Sicilian winemaking is thriving. Native grapes like Grillo, Zibibbo, Frappato and Nero d’Avola, flourish, alongside international varieties. Etna wines, grown on volcanic soils, are gaining global acclaim. Sustainable and organic practices are widespread, enhancing quality. Producers focus on terroir-driven wines with unique character. Exports are rising, and wine tourism is booming, solidifying Sicily’s status as a premier global wine region and powerhouse.
